Is it supposed to? I don't see anything in the code that indicates it should...

Furthermore, please only mark bugs private that have a reason to be marked private. There is no private information contained anywhere in this report.

The reason this does not apply to /who: Some clients use /who #channel to fill an internal address list (for clone scanning and such). I for one won't like a notice each time one of these clients or users running such scanning scripts joining a channel.

There are probably others, but I am to lazy to think of them.

*hate +W :P*

Anyway... It would be a bit crazy to do this every time you show up in ANY /who results. And if you do it only in 1 case (or a few) and not in others, then you kinda make it useless :P.
[On a sidenote, this /who "feature" was present until 3.5 years ago, but got removed / dissapeared]

Although re-adding can be nice, since then it would be even more annoying to be +W >:).

Facing reality here, do you think an oper is going to be more likely to -W or /kill? :/

(Of course, any ircop that kills for whoising/whoing should be fired on the spot, but... too bad not all server admins agree :-( )

*edit* And no, I really don't think /who should trigger a notice :P . */edit*

Then, uh. Why does it still exist?

or even better, why was it ever made?!

When someone do a /whois on me i query him with this question:

"Hi, do you want any help?"

"No? Ok Cya."
"Yes? Ok Tell Me What Do You Want..."

:-)

Why was it made: We didn't make it, it was inherited from Unreal's predecessor, therefore you'd have to ask its author.

Why does it remain: Because there are too many people who want it.
When someone do a /whois on me i query him with this question:

"Hi, do you want any help?"

"No? Ok Cya."
"Yes? Ok Tell Me What Do You Want..."
And I for one hate it when an oper does that. My response is, "Why do you feel the need to spy on your users when all they want to do is a /whois? If I needed help, I would have asked you for it. So please leave me alone." If someone needs help, they should know how to say "can you help me?" If they don't say that, then they probably don't need your help.

95% of users i've asked this they said YES..
Anyway. It's not so bad to be more helpful..

Ok, they said yes. Now had you not messaged them, do you think they would have just sat there? I don't. I think they would have /msg vonitsanet Hey, can you help me?

Your way is just intrusive. More often than not, I do a /whois to get information (believe it or not, that's what it was designed for!) not to find an oper. If I want an oper, I'll do /who +m o which is much better than randomly /whoising people and hoping I find an oper.

i think it should say ircops was /who`d if the user did /who +m o so they know someone is looking for them incase they have +H...

The argument could be said that they are +H so they cant be found or annoyed

Note that X-chat (and maybe other clients) sends a /who <#channel> to mantain a list of users per channel.
Can you imagine what could happen in a large channel where users uses x-chat (like a #linux channel)?
About the umode +W: i think that it's just a "vanity" mode... not yet very usefull... ( a wasted bit in the long mode variable :P )

Very well said and... I, personally don't think that it's a good idea to have a snomask that tells the oper when a user does /who on them, simply because I don't see any point in it, and, it would be slightly annoying. :)
