| Summary | 0003062: w2003 32&64 bit and xp 64 bit: running as a service broken by MS Patch? | ||||
| Description | On september 12, microsoft released an updated patch to fix an issue with another patch that fixes some service security error. Naturally, this fixed patch, is nice enough to break Unreal if running as a service... KB article on updated patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921883 The patch itself: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-040.mspx I'm presuming, without hard confirmation [*], that since the "fix" was only for w2003 (32&64 bit) and for XP 64 bit, only they are affected by this excellent "fix". Since I, Syzop, don't have w2003 myself at home (nor XP 64bit), someone else would need to investigate this. [*] Except that the reporter is running w2003, which probably isn't coincidence :P | ||||
| Additional Information | http://forums.unrealircd.com/viewtopic.php?t=3680 Most of the info is based on his report and not confirmed by anyone else atm. WORKAROUND: Don't run it as a service. run 'unreal uninstall' in your Unreal3.2 directory to switch from service mode to GUI mode. WORKAROUND2: Uninstall the updated fix ? ;) | ||||

Needless to say, I guess, but... It could well be that we are doing nothing wrong, but we just need to confirm that first before simply concluding we cannot do anything about it[*]. [*] Actually, we could be right, but still be able to do something about it.. this is usually refered to as 'a hack' ;P. |

Ran updates on 3 Windows 2003 SP1 servers with no issue. This patch should not (and does not) have anything to do with other services. The server service more-or-less is the component for File and Printer Sharing. We frequently disable the Server Service on XP and 2000 machines, as well as some Server 2003 machines that do not act as file servers. Needless to say, if the user was having issues with another update, I am not seeing that here as well. |
You're right, I skimmed over the 'Server' part, didn't see it. Anyway, so you're saying you have installed all (other) updates and are not seeing any issue, I guess that says enough then. Let's see what Trocotronic will say. I'm leaving it to him anyway, since I don't have 2003. |
Trocotronic doesn't have w2k3 either. If nobody confirms this issue in, say, next 2 weeks, then I'll close this bug as unable to reproduce. |

I am unable to confirm this, as I did update my machine, but nothing different happened, that did not happen before... which means, I still can't run the service as a non-priviledged user... but I can run it as an Admin. Not sure that this is the problem, but it sounds similar to my problem: http://bugs.unrealircd.org/view.php?id=2330 I would make sure they did not try to run it as non-priv, as there seems to be some issue with doing that on some versions... not sure if it is me or the ircd doing something wrong, but it sure is it's fault not to display any useful error message that helps to solve it. |
