| Summary | 0001525: New feature to convert from real host to cloaked version | ||||
| Description | I'd like to be able to convert a real hostname to the cloaked counterpart. It would be useful for checking backlogs and current channel bans where the cloaked host is used, but you only have the real name from whowas or whatever. | ||||

use the /whowas command it will show real host to opers -fez |
Such a feature would make it MUCH easier to crack the host cloaking algorithm therefore I don't think this will be added. |
It would be an IRCop only feature. I should also clarify the direction of the conversion: I enter a real hostname, the server tells me the cloaked version. When you say, to crack the algorithm, I suppose you mean, to find the used keys? The algorithm itself is no secret. |

to be honest I just don't see a real-life situation when it would be useful. As fez noted, /whowas should be sufficient. I doubt this will ever be added... perhaps you can find a module coder that wants to make such a command. |

I _have_ the real host. whowas will _not_ help me. It could even have been whowas that gave me the real host. I want the cloaked host. If you don't understand this time just close the report. edited on: 02-10-04 07:32 |

quote: It would be useful for checking backlogs and current channel bans where the cloaked host is used, but you only have the real name from whowas or whatever. explain this more? When I log a channel, joins/parts already show the hidden host. So there you already have the hidden host. How is a realhost->cloaked host converter going to be useful for channel bans where the cloaked host is what was already used anyway? Please clarify why precisely you want such a conversion and how it is beneficial... edit: accidently made this post twice, deleted once edited on: 02-10-04 08:14 |

One example is what made me write this report. We have a channel on our network that couldn't get a spider from some service to enter their channel. I wanted to check if it was a channel ban on it. But I couldn't since the bans are made on cloaked hostnames and I only had the real host. About checking logs. Yes, the cloaked names are there. But if you only have the real host, what are you looking for? |
for what you ask, there is already a way to convert real host to cloaked host: /oper me blah /whowas user user was [email protected] /mode me -o (youre no longer oper) /whowas user user was [email protected] that is a bit of typing but it works just fine and solves the problem you have. -- fez |

-- But I couldn't since the bans are made on cloaked hostnames and I only had the real host. Well, you have a host of "something.someplace.com" and there is a ban of "273FD2.someplace.com" odds are, that's the ban that is matching them. Plus, really the spider service should have these logs available. It should have some kind of log saying "was not able to join #blah reason: banned" or something like that. |

It was an non resolving IP. But enough of this now. I know this is futile :) |

when I think of it, perhaps a /who flag which always shows sptr->user->virthost is a good idea? Eg: '/who +X Syzop', like +R but then opposite.. always show cloaked/virthost.. (note that even though you are mode +x, the sptr->user->virthost is filled in for banchecking, so it should always be available). Ah well... I don't know :p. It's just that I agree that cloaked IPs (not hosts) can be hard. edited on: 02-11-04 00:30 |

I wrote a little module that implements a command called /cloakhost. It works like /cloakhost 1.2.3.test.com -devel.unrealircd.com- Cloaked version is: unreal-3E2A1FA2.test.com You can download it on http://www.codemastr.com/?page=module (CloakHost-1.0) |
