| Summary | 0001608: New Anti Spam idea (Umode) | ||||
| Description | working on anti-spam ideas, how about a umode known as " blind " (since u have deaf) that stops the user reciving join / parts to all channels. considering u have Chanmode +u, i recon the umode would stop spammers as they spam " on join " (if Chanmode +u exists, surely a umode would be easy?) | ||||

And at the same time it would make the idea of a channel useless since no one can tell who is in the channel. |

nope, not nessarely, if u added the option in ur spam filter to allow the server to set them the umode, when they spam then if its a dial up bot they would render useless, since they cant see the users joining, sure a ban is better liek GZline or Gline, but its another option u can add, as it acts as a mini shun.. so to speak, - also, it would benefit users, who sit in channels that get floods, as it would not show them therefore saving them form being lagged up ( particaully with webtvs since they cant handle any kind of floods at all ) - users have the choice of using Umode +d which renders channel floods usless, so why not allow them to use +u to stop the join parts? sure channel mode +u can do that, what if no ops r active?? " codemastr 2004-02-29 17:51 And at the same time it would make the idea of a channel useless since no one can tell who is in the channel. " ur doing this with channel mode +u anyway are u not? O_o the difference is, the option is avaiable for them to set it themselfs should a channel op not be around to set channel mode +u. |

As you said, it would be better to ban these people. Why should the spam bots be allowed to continue to join channels and waste server bandwidth? I don't see any point to this feature. Also, get your facts straight, +u has ___nothing___ to do with stopping spam. +u is for "celebrity" type chats where conversations between individuals are not wanted, only communications between the users and the ops. And umode +d is designed for services, not for users. If a user is +d and you do type "`hey there" they will see it. |

doesn't seem useful to me either.. especially since we now have 'viruschan' which is a good tradeoff between totally killing/making the client dead and just blocking. |

Yeah it seems this would cause more problems. Consider a false positive. UserA is detected as spamming (even though he was really just giving a URL to a friend). Now UserA joins a channel and no one is there. He wonders where all his friends are. Then, out of no where, it seems as though people are talking in the channel. He then wonders if his client is broken or if the server is broken because his nicklist is empty. All it would seem to do to me is to confuse users. |
