Summary0001972: make windows service not default
Descriptionwell, it seems that about 500 people per day install unrealircd, don't correctly set up their config, double click unreal.exe, can't find service.log or figure out why their ircd won't start.

I think it would help if you main the windows installer make the "install as NT service" option non-default, so that only people who ACTUALLY HAVE A CLUE what they're doing enable the service. This way users can see the errors and figure out their problems (at least some of them ;)

just a thought....

I totally agree.

If this is not changed, at least make Unreal log successful startups in the service.log. Then when we tell the windows users to check service.log, it will have either the errors or "IRCd started without any problems". Something like that will help alot.

The reason I suggest this, is some installers don't have a setting for that option and automatically assume everyone would want it as a service. I do not know about the installer used by Unreal, I have never used it.

I have to agree... the option is "Install as NT Service (for experienced users)" or something like that... but it's enabled by default?! Doesn't make any sense to me :/ .

Yeah I added "not for beginners" a few versions ago, assuming it was unchecked by default [coz when running it it was unchecked by default, but that was just because it 'remembered' my old settings]. 2-3 weeks ago [so after release] I noticed this was not the case and suggested we change this for exactly the reason mentioned by fez above.
Anyway, I'm currently (well, since the past ~2 weeks already) taking a break/"vacation :P. I'll keep the report open, just as a reminder.
