Summary0002236: Idea to help security for servers
Descriptionwhen servers spilt it states in quit messages which server has spilt from the linked server, or is it vice versa, my idea is basically to hide the quit message or change it with a option to stop the server names being shown, this means..
1) it hides servers and which ones are linked to another as its being shown
2) it helps by stopping people seeing " weak links " or " weak servers " to target to cause spilts

Heh, though I do have to point out a few ircds do seem to have this feature, but YUCK. I think it just causes more problems than it solves... what if I switch off my connection notices (due to lots of clients connecting/quitting on my largish network perhaps)? Then a netsplit happens, and I need to /connect something, but how do I find out which server split off other than trying to compare /links output(s)? Yeah right. No, I think server security is sometimes just best done outside the IRCd...

If you have do have a weak server that's splitting a lot... it might be time to consider a delink :) .

Ok, lets see. We disable that. The a user just types /links or /map to get the same info. So I guess you want those disabled too? Well, with a little free time, someone can use /who to reconstruct the network layout using the hop counts. So I guess we need to remove /who hop counts as well? And there are other ways that a careful user could get this information. So again it only provides false security.
