Summary0002280: +v and +m becoming obsolete?
Descriptioni dont really see any use for +m and +v anymore, except for ranking people, because if you voice some people and set +m, you clearly dont want certain people to talk..but why not just kick and/or ban them? i really dont see the point of having users just sitting in a channel unable to talk, it seems pointless.

on the other hand, it is useful for presenting to a group without interuption, but why not just use auditorium mode?

+m and +v are useful in some serious situations.

Examples:
300 proxy clones join your channel and start flooding like crap. Solution: +m the channel, and +v the real users until all the clones are removed.

You want to run an annoucement channel, but do not want normal user input. You +m the channel, and +v all the people with permission to make announcements.

m/v are not obsolete at all
not only for clones (imo the cheapest and only action to quiet them instantly)
or announcements - also for short time, when a few user start a debatte and you don't feel like removing them - just quiet the channel - tell them to stop because of ... - finished.
there are still some people without lack of diplomacy around not kicking for any single shi. ;)

but obviously - the use of those modes has gotten obsolete, since some ingenious specialst startet the "auto-voice for all joiners"-concept - nevertheless m/v are usefull in proper utilisation

Come to #unreal-support some time and you'll see one way it is very useful. The channel is +m, and you don't get +v until you pass a quiz. Other channels use it to prevent floods (channel is +m and you must be in the channel for 30 seconds before you get +v). +v and +m aren't going anywhere.
