oh yeap i agree.
some times i want to be "away" and i don'n want everyone to know my idle time. This also may be created as a module from someone..:P

Good idea. I've already done it for opers only, but it should be 'officially' supported.

Any answer from coders ?

I think this is a dumb idea. Who cares if you are idle. I would actually not mind having my idle time 3 hours all the time, i find people bug me less when I am idle for a long time...

But if you insist, here is a simple mIRC remote anyone can figure out:

ON *:CONNECT:{
  .timer $+ $cid 0 300 CTCP $me PING
}

That will ping yourself every 5 minutes, resetting your idle time.

Beastie

2005-02-20 15:34

reporter   ~0009198

Pffff...
It has nothing to do with resetting the idle. We want that nobody can see that we are present at the moment avoiding being bothered. And one can find out that we are present when one can see our idle. That's why we don't want our idle being seen. If we always resets our idle, it causes the opposite effect.

medice

2005-02-20 16:24

if you feel bothered like this by users you probably should not use a chat-system?

Beastie

2005-02-20 16:53

reporter   ~0009202

IRC is the most suitable tool for me to contact my friends and relatives. And as an operator, sometimes it happens, that I'd like to live my private life, but somebody doesn't let me doing this and bothering me with some stupid questions and I can't answer them, because I have neither time nor mood. I usually set my nick to away in this case, but there are people who are unable to understand this. They should wait for their turn. And I hate when somebody starts the conservation with "f/m?" or "how old are you?" or "can you send a photo?" or something like that. I just chat to talk about interesting things, movies, music, everyday life, etc., not to find a girlfriend. Imho, IRC is not a "singles online" forum and should not be similar this. I hate this feeling.

medice

reporter   ~0009203

during a stressy period I was idling for about several days with my bnc. in the query-log was each time the same daily quota of stupid messages as usually - so I don't believe those guys even look on idle time - since this seemingly requieres an already too high level of knowledge ;) (bnc has no idle-faker activated of course and no scripts that would case an idle-reset...)
as it is my experience that communication-junkies will always message around choiceless, searching anyone to talk, I don't believe that such a setting would change this.
I appreciate your privacy, but I doubt this idle-time-remover will help
Because i hate when other people know wheter i`m talking or not..
Well that's not nearly a good enough reason for me to add this. As someone said, use a script to create a fake idle time.
And I hate when somebody starts the conservation with "f/m?" or "how old are you?" or "can you send a photo?" or something like that
Somehow I doubt that the people who start such conversations take the time to check your idle before messaging you.

I really see no reason at all why hiding the idle time is useful.

opteron

2005-02-21 05:15

reporter   ~0009213

For example some friend of mine that is irritating me a lot wants to talk with me. I can`t tell him that i`m busy and don`t have time to talk or something like that, because he can /whois me and see that i`m talking with other people. I can`t just ignore him, because i need him for something else, and he would get angry. If there is a umode for hidding idle, i can just pretend that i`m not present and talk to other people and he won`t know. Thats why i want this umode.

OK, so you have time to talk to users who need to talk with a netadmin for help and your operators, but no time to talk to your friends? Odd...

You keep saying the same thing over and over, I agree with codemastr. "/nick some-other-nick" and tell the people who need to talk to you that you are some-other-nick - prblem solved :)

You can also tell your friends that you have some automatic actions like timers, or some events that make you restart your idle.

opteron

2005-02-22 04:59

reporter   ~0009234

Int21h, did you read what i had said ? I don`t think so.

Beastie

2005-02-22 08:54

reporter   ~0009235

Neither do I. But probably they won't understand us. :) It is more convenient to say to use another nick, or mirc script. I haven't been so lazy and implemented it for me, but I have to apply my patch by every uograde, and in this case I completely lost any support. I've posted a report about a crash that is probaly not caused by my mod. I'm not an advanced programmer, but I though it is a good idea and made it. I think, at the end everybody is going to write own mods to suffice his/her needs, and then almost nobody can post a bugreport and the development process would be less efficient. Thus, I still think it should be implemented.

Int21h

2005-02-22 10:22

reporter   ~0009236

I think I've read the first 5 or 6 posts because the rest are such uselless. I think u are the one (or two :)) that don't understand what I meant. You meant that you don't want users to see your idle because maybe you don't want to answer him/her. I tell you that restarting your idle every X time would be a good excuse to tell your friend, and tell him/her that although you are out the machine, you have some remotes or timers that make restart your idle because of sending messages to some IRC Service (if your a netadmin, to OperServ for example), and because of that although it seems that you're talking, the idle restarts are only automatic processes.

If people need to talk to you, then why are you trying to hide from them? I still don't see how hiding the idle time makes any difference. Personally, if I don't see the idle time showing up, I'm going to assume it's because your hiding it and I'll just try to msg you anyway.

Beastie

2005-02-22 10:59

Yep, but he'll feel free to decide to answer You or not and You won't know definitely whether he is present or not, and You won't have any reason to be angry when he decided not to answer.
Yep, but he'll feel free to decide to answer You or not and You won't know definitely whether he is present or not, and You won't have any reason to be angry when he decided not to answer.
Knowing the idle time does not let you "definately know" whether someone is present. For one thing, my idle time could read 12 hours, however, I am most certainly active - I just haven't had a reason to say anything. On the other hand, it could read 5 seconds and I'm away. Many people have scripts that will say (I'm away type /ctcp mynick PAGE if you need me) which would reset their idle time each time someone /msg's them. So your point is moot.

Beastie

2005-02-22 11:38

reporter   ~0009240

Could happen, of course, but not typical imho. As far as I experienced, many people like using a simple mirc without any script or x-chat. I had had a versioninfo log before, but I can't provide it now, due to our upgrade it has been deleted. There were mostly simple mirc or x-chat replies and quite a many script have a modified version reply, thus I can assume, mostly simple clients are used in general.
As far as I experienced, many people like using a simple mirc without any script or x-chat
Well by default, mIRC does not do a /whois when you open a query.

But can be set without any script.

codemastr, Int21h and others... are you playing games or what ? You keep saying some excuses that have no sense at all. I don`t see why are you againts this feature as it can be very useful in many situations.

opteron, I think you are playing the same games then, the only "useful situation" you have pointed out is: "I don't want people to message me because I have a low idle" - IMHO, that is NOT an "useful situation".

Beastie, you have been doing nothing but saying the same things opteron has been saying, which has been no use at all.

medice is correct. The easiest thing I have ever done is make a script that blocks PM's from people you do not wish to be PM'd by. It took me <10 minutes, and is used by many people. It simply redirects all PM's to a single window, and replies to the person PMing you that you do not wish to receive PM's. There is also a "whitelist" for people you don't mind getting PM's from.
Beastie, you have been doing nothing but saying the same things opteron has been saying, which has been no use at all.
I've already done this mod for me, thus I don't mind whether it will be implemented or not. Imho, it should be implemented, but if it is not going to be done, then I don't mind. But I agree opteron's opinion and I insist on support him with my notes in this debate

And when I have been doing nothing, then let's look what You have done.
You have recommended a mirc script, and You've recommended changing nick.. do You think it is more than nothing? Do You think we haven't thought of it? Since codemastr is a developer, it is okay, that he is against our opinion, and doesn't want to implement this. But why will be it bad for You if at the end it gets implemented? You are against our interest but You probably don't have any reason for this. You must be very bored.. Try doing some useful work instead. ;P
codemastr is a developer, it is okay, that he is against our opinion, and doesn't want to implement this
since when he against it? to my knowledge he WANTS A PROPER REASON to add it,
the only real reason i cna think of id want this is if someone or poeple are flooding the server id hide my idle time coz then they would be put off they dunno if im here or gone.

Anyway im sure many people would think there client was broken if they didnt see a idle time when they typed /whois nickname nickname - i would thats for sure.

I must say that i agree with opteron and Beastie. It would be nice to see such umode in future version of unreal. And you others, pls stop writting about mirc scripts, as they are not the best solution.

Ok, and again, why "would it be nice"? If people can't provide a valid reason (something other than "I want to hide from my users") then it won't be added. It's as simple as that.

2005-02-23 03:49

More to the point.

Why should it be included in the (official) distribution of Unreal, when from the looks of it, it's best included as a module as the use for it is mostly a niche thing, (the whole debate as to how useful it is aside).

opteron

2005-02-25 04:41

Look codemastr, can you just make an official module for it ?

syzop

2005-02-25 10:20

I don't know why people started about modules, because you cannot just say from a module 'hey don't send this line', you would have to copy the whole whois code and rip it out, which is if you ask me not exactly supported and a hell to maintain if any feature gets added (AngryWolf knows this ;p).

on-topic:
I don't know... there are times when I wanted to hide my idle time too, but I would hate it if _someone else_ would hide his/her idle time :P.

40 notes (most of them usefull) for a feature?
Opteron , Beastie i agree with u and for me is useful.
Some times i want to hide my idle time too for many reasons..
But here can anyone tell his opinion..
A feature request is not a place to fight guys..
Calm down everyone:-p

sorry to jump in with my two cents, but we have made a module that creates the old *annonymous channels* mode (it requires that you have certain chmodes set and that you *forbid* nick anonymous)...the only glitch we have is our network is small and you could easily write a script deducing from idle time who said what

I don't think this should be officially supported. If your going to oper up, you should be expected to help. And if you don't want to help, then that's your decision. Why worry about it? You don't get paid for being a net admin do ya?

I say no one has provided any other reasons other than hiding from users, and therefore I'm deleting the report.
