| Summary | 0000955: [W] Crash at random / high cpu usage | ||||
| Description | Sometime without any warning it'll just up and crash. Then with it being a services it's restarted and right after crash again. The ReleaseID is (1.1.1.1.2.1.2.30 2003/05/03 15:42:20) I've had this problem befor with beta 15. When I updated to the current cvs version at the time it stoped. Then started happening again right befor I upgraded to beta 16. I have attached the DrWatson info, if it's of any help at all. It dosen't create any core files, just up and crashes. I've also included the config file. This even happen when I copyed the unreal directory to my win xp pro box, although it wasen't a service it still didn't create any core files. any help would be appreciated | ||||
| Additional Information | [Syzop] There's a bug in the resolver which can cause: - high CPU usage (a [temporarely] stall) - crashes: usually you can see async_dns in the wircd.somenum.core backtrace - I think not able to resolve some hostnames is also related There are probably multiple windows-specific resolver bugs causing all this. codemastr and me are trying to figure it out but the resolver is the hardest (and most ugly) code of the ircd. However there's hope thanks to mpatrol, minidumps and (human) source audits :). | ||||

I did actuly get it to output core files by removing it as a service. these files are wircd.1220.core and wircd.308.core and uploaded |

a while after having this problem I restarted my router, and it stoped crashing. This leaves me baffled. I wouldn't think a reouter could cause any problem with it. Although that seems the case. If someone figured out how it was caussing trouble, couldn't it be used as some sort of attack. I beleave this should be looked into. The router is probably corrupting the packets. Ideas, suggestions? LRL edited on: 05-07-03 19:16 |

If you are bored, can you set set::options::dont-resolve, then the resolver is almost fully disabled... and if you do so, please report back if it helped or not. |

[03:46:24] <Syzop> did you see I asked for set::options::dont-resolve ? ;p [03:46:31] <LRLd> yea [03:46:44] <LRLd> but once I restart the router the problem goes away [03:47:40] <LRLd> when it happens again I'll try that Syzop, but I'm sure it's s/ting unrelated to unreal |

heh :P |

It's definaly something to deal with DNS. Some guy came into #unreal-support and had the very same problem. He was also having trouble with users DNS's being resolved. After he added set::options::dont-resolve it stoped. ICS seemed to create the dns problem. |
Hm what's ICS? :P |

Internet Connection Sharing? |

Please try http://www.vulnscan.org/UnrealIrcd/win_cvs_build.html (altough LRL is already doing that, just in case anyone else is looking at this too).. I'm currently testing if minidumps are working ok, received 0 replies so far :/. edited on: 05-29-03 21:56 |

Removed core files and made bug public, so for other ppl: please download that debug version (see above) :p |

codemastr and me found&fixed some serious resolver bugs, please download the updated version from http://www.vulnscan.org/UnrealIrcd/win_cvs_build.html or direct: http://huizen.dds.nl/~syz/win-precompiled/b16-cvs20030601.exe In my own tests the previous version crashed (with a special heap checker) within 10s after <100 connects and now it didn't after >3000 connects (then stopped testing), so... please test ;). |

Hm ok, I now got rid of the whole win32 resolver code (it's now using the *NIX code with some modifications). Get it from: http://www.vulnscan.org/UnrealIrcd/win_cvs_build.html NOTE: as a side effect your set::nameserver should now be set correctly to your nameserver. |
Tomorrow I'll work on the nameserver garbage, I have an old win32 port of ircu that at least tries to get the nameserver from the registry. |
/me drops win32 coding.. I think I've done enough "good stuff" for them (and totally in contrast to my personal opionion that windoze ircd's shouldnt exist) :P. codemastr: so you can use my patch etc.. only resolver thing I'll still work at is security stuff. |

Let's see if beta17 fixes this. |
